Thanjavur's Brihadiswara Temple (also spelt as Brahadeeswarar) was built by Raja Raja Chola in eleventh century to commemorate his victory over the king of Kerala. Today, the temple complex includes the tall Brihadiswara Temple surrounded by an Amman Temple, Muruagan Temple, a Ganapathi Temple and a mantapa for Nandi.The gopura of Brihadiswara Temple has a 85 tonne stone crown.

The Square Shivaganga Tank in the fort was excavated by Rajaraja I and later renovated to provide drinking water for the City. The fort contains the great Brihadishvara Temple, Schwartz Church, and public amusement park.
